Dutch and European rules say companies must help use less energy. Here’s what companies need to do:
If a company uses a lot of energy (more than 50,000 kWh of electricity or 25,000 m³ of gas per year), it must find ways to save energy that will pay for themselves within five years. There are also special lists of savings measures for different types of businesses.
These companies must report every four years what steps they have taken to save energy. This helps to see how things are going and ensures that they keep looking for new ways to use less energy.
Large companies (those with more than 250 employees or a large turnover) must do a special check every four years to see where they can save energy.
Companies that use even more energy (from 10 million kWh of electricity or 170,000 m³ of gas per year) need to figure out very carefully how they use energy and where they can save.
These rules help all businesses, large and small, contribute to less energy consumption. Small businesses need to be energy efficient, and large businesses need to do even more. This is important for the Netherlands and Europe to deal better with energy and the climate.
